The ‘Awa plant was brought to Hawaii by the first Polynesian settlers. The root is harvested, pounded with water, and made into a drink with narcotic properties. Hawaiians use ‘Awa to relieve pain, cure coughs, relax and as a sleep aid. ‘Awa is also used for religious ceremonies by kahuna.
