Lauaʻe is a native Hawaiian fern. It grows off runner roots on the ground and the leaves reach up to three feet in length. Lauaʻe is characterized by its fragrant smell, which is reminiscent of maile, and by the round spores that often dot its leaves. Lauaʻe is used for hula adornments, lei, and to add a pleasant fragrance to kapa cloth. Makana, Kauaʻi is famous for its lauaʻe ferns.
