The Maile plant is native to Hawaiʻi. The vines are twined together to make an open ended lei, which is given on special occasions. The bark gives out a sweet fragrance similar to vanilla grass, and the flowers smell faintly of honey. Maile is one of the special flowers associated with hula, and Laka, goddess of hula.
