Waʻa (Hawaiian Canoe) Pillow Cover

Hawaiians traveled over open oceans in canoes or nā waʻa. These solidly built vessels were constructed mainly of Koa wood, grown in the uplands of the islands, preferred for its strength and beauty. Ceremonies and chants are observed before, during and after the felling of the tree. Then it is taken down to the ocean where the final woodworking is completed. Paddlers power the waʻa, and the steersman in the rear uses his paddle as a rudder.

Pillow cover: rust colored body trimmed in a tan weave print, brown Wa’a canoe block print surrounded by a brown basket weave trim
