Beginning in 1878, workers were brought from Spain and Portugal to work Hawaiian sugar cane fields. Immigrants from the Madeiran Islands brought with them a small four-stringed instrument called the machete, which evolved into the Hawaiian ʻukulele. The origin of the name is debated; one common translation is “jumping flea”– perhaps a way to describe the motion of the musician’s hand.
